How Many Children Can We Help in 2015?
I, like so many, lived a lifetime with undiagnosed celiac.
Education, understanding, and testing were all rare when I was a child. It took 40 years for me to get my answer. No one should have to live with undiagnosed celiac - or any of the hundreds of symptoms - anymore. But they do.
Nearly 1:100 of us have celiac, but over 80% are STILL undiagnosed. That's a lot of people needlessly ill. And studies are also finding that even more have nonceliac gluten sensitivity.
Yet still - we aren't testing routinely, we aren't recognizing the symptoms (that are often relieved with a gluten free diet), and we just keep testing for everything but (and giving medicines for all these related symptoms.) Diet change. Just imagine how many can benefit from physical and emotional symptoms just by being told that a gluten free diet is what they need.
Let's Educate Those Who Routinely See Kids Who Suffer from Symptoms
Gabriel's Journey is a new School Nurse Celiac Education Program.
Materials are prepared and ready to be shared, thanks to Sybil Nassau, founder of GIG ShorelineEast.
I personalized Adam's Gluten Free Surprise (and Hailey's Gluten Free Surprise) to create Gabriel's Gluten Free Surprise: Helping Others Understand Gluten Free, a children's book written to help the adult reader understand gluten free. This version includes links to Gabriel's Journey. By donating a copy to your local school (with a personalized letter suggesting they seek the information offered through Gabriel's Journey), you can help increase celiac awareness and education - which can help children's families be led to correct answers. The recipient will also now have a book to offer the classroom teacher of students who are gluten free - so she/he understands how to keep their gluten free students safe and included. Just Imagine!

Donating a book/books to your local school(s)? Please complete the contact form with information about the school you shared information with (whether its Gabriel's Gluten Free Surprise or another book, or whether its Gabriel's Journey or another School Nurse Education program.)
I will start a list on this page with the schools reached.
